My work is good! I am analyzing data right now and have a rough skeleton of what my thesis will be about. I am looking at the way in which the teachers and administrators linguistically construct Reggio Inspired identities. I am using discourse analysis to look at their talk in both their interviews and during staff meetings.
So, what did you eventually decide on for your topic? Did you stay with the subject of African-American teachers?
How funny that it is here and I didn't even know it. I guess I am so wrapped up in school and research! I got your email and will be sending a few articles shortly!!!
I am home with a sore back, and don't have my contact information handy. I did notice you can email info@chicagocommons.org with a query about your research. Most Reggio-Inspired schools in the US that I know about are eager to participate in research, since it is the first question Americans ask about schools.
My email is jaxnum1@yahoo.com. If you email me there, and tell me what you already have, I can send you some. There was a entire special issue of Theory into Practice that came out around Reggio. Rebecca New has a piece in it that I am using. It looks like you are developing those ideas!!! I know the hardest part for me was deciding what to study. I think I cahnged my study about 100 times. It came together though the more I read, thought and wrote about it. Mine is an ethnographic study of a Reggio-Inspired school. I limited it to the 2 preschool rooms and took field notes, videotaped small and large groups and interviewed all the teachers and administrators. I am showing the videos to the teachers to get their reactions to their practice.
The principal at the Velma Thomas school in Chicago was just at our conference. I can't quite remember her name at the moment (it was a long couple of days). I'll see if I can get it for you. She was really nice. I'm sure she'll be able to connect you with that group.
Are you in contact with the folks at Chicago Commons? There are a whole lot of African American children, families, and teachers involved in Reggio Inspired schools, and have been for a long time.
What inspires you about the Reggio Emilia Approach?
I am inspired by the view of the child as whole and competent with worthwhile ideas to pursue and investigate. I appreciate the teachers role as reasearcher and the co-inquiry that takes place.
About Me:
I have been in the early education field for about ten years and have been very interested in the Reggio Emilia Approach for the last five years. Currently I am an administrator at a childcare setting and a graduate student.
