I love that description Lauren. I think that children come to school with expectations of what school will be like, and 'who' the teacher will be as much as the parents do and that is often the authority figure that Jackie refers to and a room ful...

A teacher is more than a practitioner, she is the author of pedagogical paths and processes. She contributes to overcoming, at least in the field of education, the arrogant idea of the continuing separation between theory and practice. (from "In D...

I was at Reggio in April, and the experience of visiting is absolutely irreplaceable to someone using their approach. The best part was dialoguing with other educators on a philosophical level, and also getting to visit the schools and hearing the...

HI Kenyon, Take full advantage of the Sunday when you arrive, you won't have free time when shops are open after that. They close for lunch and supper, which are the only times you have free. Also, the markets in the piazzas are open on Sunday. I ...

I was first introduced to Reggio Emilia Approach in 2001 in Canada. I fell in love with the environment first and through my journey I have implemented many Reggio aspects to my classroom and planning. I now have the opportunity to visit Reggio Em...

I don't know Marianne. Can we really call the unwillingness to compromise bravery, or the willingness to compromise cowardice? What is the distinction? Yes, organizing politically is a large piece of what they do in Reggio. It is also something th...

Hi Jackie,
Hello yourself! I hope your writing is going well. I'm on break, and waiting to be hired for next year. I've been approved by the Board of Ed, but will feel more content when I've actually signed something. I'm attending a Responsive Classroom Institute next week. I'm eager to learn what they have to offer.

Wow, you were up late or I'm up early. Some of the questions I'm considering are What do you think preschool children need to learn? Do you think there are any challenges/barriers to children learning what they need to know? What do you think are the best ways for preschool teachers to support children's learning.
These are all questions just off the top of my head. I would like to collect data through interviews, and if I have enough time I would love to do a focus group.

Hi Jackie, Thanks for checking up on me. I'm in the middle of my lit review. Again for the articles. I have a reading partner and we are now reading We Are All Explorers. How are you? How's your work coming?

Don't you hate leaving a program that requires such an investment of heart? I'm sure you are doing good, and that children will remember the time they spent with you.

Congratulations on the success of the maze experience. It sounds like you really build something to last. Will the 2nd graders stay together for the next four years in the program?

Hi Jackie,

I'm just working on my proposal right now. I'm a little stuck about choosing if I want to focus on African-American educators and maybe include parents or have a cross section of educators of Euro-American, Latina and African-American. My thoughts on methodology are doing surveys and interview. I would gladly accept any articles you can send my way. Thanks.

Hi Jackie,

Did each child have a clay avatar to navigate the maze? Or, were the clay critters features of the maze that one would encounter when they reached a particular room? What a big and complex project! Was it mostly 2nd graders and undergrads, or were older children also involved? The initial sketches looked like they were done by older hands.

Thanks for sharing. What do you mean, to navigate the afterschool program. It wasn't a map, right? Do you mean to provide a common goal?

Profile Information

What inspires you about the Reggio Emilia Approach?
It's hard to pinpoint one thing that inspires me about the Reggio Approach. I think, like the Italians say, it is the whole system. The system lies in the interconnection of all it's parts. I truly believe that this way of working captures the essence of children, of teachers, of parents, of community! It fits with the way I view teaching and learning!
About Me:
I am finally done analyzing the data and have started writing my thesis on Reggio-Inspired identity. I found some very interesting things about the way in which the teachers of this school negotiate the meaning of Reggio-Inspired. This semester is busy and next semester will be even busier.

What does it mean to be Reggio-Inspired???

As some of you may already know, my thesis work has been focused on understanding the way in which teachers and administrators build and negotiate both individual and collective Reggio-Inspired identities. Right now I am in the process of analyzing the data that I have collected and beginning to think about the direction that my research has taken. With this in mind, I think it only fitting to open up the discussion to this community and get your views on what it means to be Reggio-Inspired, how… Continue

A Provocation on the Teacher's Role

"The teacher is not removed from her role as an adult, but instead revises it in an attempt to become co-creator, rather than a transmitter, of knowledge and culture. As teachers, we have to carry out this role in the full awareness of our vulnerability, and this means accepting doubts and mistakes as well as allowing for surprise and curiosity, all of which are necessary for true acts of knowledge and creation. This requires a 'powerful' teacher, the only kind of teacher suitable for our equall… Continue

A Provocation on Childhood and Time

I recently found this quote and would like to share it with everyone. When I read this for the first time, these words truly caused me to pause, reflect and consider my way of being with children. Malaguzzi's wisdom here should speak to all of us regarding the image of the child and the issue of time!

"One has to respect the time of maturation; of development; of the tools of doing and understanding; of the full, slow, extravagant, lucid and ever-changing emergence of children's capacities, it… Continue
